Base (Foundation) chain=the
length of chain made at the beginning of a piece of crochet as a basis

Turning chain=one,
or more chains, depending upon the length of stitch required, worked at
the beginning of a row.
When instructions read - ‘Cast
off 2 sts, K5 (or another number), the st left on the right
hand needle after casting off, counts as one st.
Casting on a ‘Seam
St’ - When casting on a ‘seam st’, do not
inc by knitting into front and back of stitch. Cast on stitch, place
on left hand needle, then work as first st of row as indicated.
